The year 1812 is important for the Napoleonic war because in this year Napoleon's invasion of Russia was unsuccessful. In order to celebrate the victory of Russia Red Cross commissioned Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky to compose an orchestral overture in E flat major with the title Festival Overture The Year 1812 and opus number 49. It was the best known work of Tchaikovsky who started working on the overture in October 1880 and finished within the month of November.
