The song was written by Bernie Taupin and Sir John himself as a favor to Elton Johns friend and tennis star Billie Jean King. The song is all about the celebration of freedom and the singers celebration of life. In the song John sings about himself being a philanderer roaming about and hitting the streets if he finds any reason for doing it. He is proud to be born in the state of Philadelphia where he has grown up from a child to a man. The song became a number-one U.S. hit single during the early and mid-1970s.
