To the dismay of automakers and the Bush administration, California along with 16 other states received the legal sanction to cut down on auto emissions as a battle against global warming, ruled by a federal court in Fresno. The case originated in 2002 when a state law forcing automakers to decrease emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases in new cars from 2009, was passed.
