Gulf of Mexico Geological History
The Gulf of Mexico ranks ninth largest among the water bodies of the world. This body of water is an oval shaped ocean basin surrounded by the North American continent and the island of Cuba. On the Northeast, North and Northwest it is bordered by the Gulf coast of United States; on the South and Southwest by Mexico and in the Southeast by Cuba. It is about 810 nautical miles or 1500 km wide and is filled with sedimentary rocks and debris.

The city of Albuquerque, New Mexico was founded as the Spanish colonial outpost of Alburquerque in 1706, and to this day retains much of the old heritage and flavor. The first r in Alburquerque was dropped some time in the 19th century.
