Erie Canal is a canal in New York State and it runs from the Hudson River to Lake Erie. The canal links the Great Lakes with the Atlantic Ocean. It was opened on October 26, 1825. The canal was 363 miles long; 40 feet wide; and 4 feet deep. There used to be a total of 83 locks along the canal. It became a faster transport route than the cart-pulled route between the Eastern Seaboard and the western interior. The Erie Canal caused a big influx in western New York.
