In normal, everyday context, Censure implies the process of issuing a formal reprimand or upbraid to an individual by an authoritative body. In certain countries like the United States and Canada however, the term refers to a procedure for publicly reprimanding a public official for inappropriate behavior. The procedure may or may not have constitutional validity in a particular country but is generally considered a dark blot on the reputation and career of the individual censured.
