He made him run back to third and before dropping the ball as he fell on the ground he tagged out Willits. Manager Mike Scioscia stated that Varitek lost the ball from his hand after tagging of Willits however umpire Tim Welke disagreed, stating that the catcher was holding the ball for a long period of time and hence Willits was declared out.
