The name of Canberra, the capital of Australia is derived from the word `Kanbarra', the meaning of which in the Ngunnwal language is `meeting place'. Before the Europeans settled down in here, sometimes in the 1820s, this area was inhabited by the Ngunnawal and Walgulu tribes. Many of these tribesmen have died, since the Europeans settled due to diseases like measles and smallpox. Joshua John Moore, who is a European settler, had purchased this site in 1826 and renamed it Canberry. Among the other settlers are the Murray and Gibbes families.
