Poire d'angoisser or the Pear of Anguish is a torture device that has its origin in medieval Spain. This instrument is Venetian, late 1500's, and consists of bronze segments and key, iron screw. The face of Satan was etched on the screw. It used to be of different sizes depending upon whether it was forcibly inserted in the victims (or offenders) mouth, rectum or vagina.
