
The weekly news journal or magazine of America namely Newsweek is printed in the city of New York. It has a wide circulation including its strong presence in the United States. This magazine was initially introduced in the year 1933 but it marked its actual beginning with its publicity in the year 1935.
This weekly magazine was brought into effect by the few stockholders belonging to the United States such as Ward Cheney, Paul Mellon and John Hay Whitney. It is the second leading news weekly journal in the U.S. Newsweek and another widely circulated American weekly news magazine namely Time are much ahead than the U.S. News & World Report, American news weekly which holds the third position.
About $2.5 million were spent by the actual promoters of the Newsweek for its initial commencement. On 17th February in the year 1933 it was originally established by Thomas J.C. Martyn. Seven photographs were printed on the cover page of its first publication which was based on the news of that week. Later in the year 1937 it was collaborated with Today, a weekly magazine established by the ex-governor of New York namely Averell Harriman and Vincent Astor in the year 1932.
After the collaboration Vincent Astor was appointed as the chairman of Newsweek magazine and he also acted as its major shareholder till his death in the year 1959. Malcolm Muir in the year 1937 became the President and editor-in-chief for this weekly journal and he paid much attention towards the explanatory stories and also initiated international publications and signed columns. In the year 1961 Washington Post Company bought this weekly news magazine.
Newsweek is well-known for its tolerant and expressive outlook towards any news. As revealed by the figures of the year 2003 this magazine has a global distribution of over 4 million copies and out of which 2.7 million are circulated in the United States alone. It is also printed in Korean, Polish, Russian, Spanish, Japanese, Spanish and Arabic versions. Newsweek acts as a co-producer for the radio program namely Newsweek on Air along with the Jones Radio Network.
