Stress is part and parcel of life. As a matter of fact, without some due stress at the workplace, we would not strive to meet deadlines or achieve production targets and goals. A quick way out of managing stress is to terminate it by submitting a
resignation as the last resort. Instead, one should look for better
alternatives to handle it.
On the other hand, stress levels must be moderated and controlled, as too much of it can be destructive to one’s physical and mental well-being. Excessive stress at the workplace can lead to increased blood pressure and heart rate, sweating, migraines, gastrointestinal disorders and emotional upheavals like anger, anxiety, depression and low self esteem.
Stress that goes unmanaged can result in poor work performance, over-reliance or even abuse and addiction to prescription drugs, diminished communication skills and irrational behavior which includes getting into quarrels over trivial office issues with colleagues.
Stress itself is triggered by a number of causes and could arise from doing tedious tasks that are not related to the job scope. These pesky burdens can lead to one being overworked and consequently having less time for rest and recreation. Two of the major inducers of stress, or stressors are unreasonable bosses and colleagues in which one cannot work well with.
Although stress is virtually impossible to terminate, there are several ways to mitigate and control stress in the office to prevent stress levels from escalating and harming one’s health. One of the ways is to avoid getting into conflict with colleagues over non-work related matters. These conflicts could potentially escalate and spill over work matters, and severely affecting yourself in the process. The crucial idea behind this is to make friends and be cordial with everyone rather than offending people at the workplace.
With respect to relations between the management and employees, constant and purposeful communication can serve to reduce stress levels. Misunderstandings and disputes should be resolved face-to-face and in an objective manner without making any personal comments. In addition, keeping these tensions and bottling up is detrimental to health and can lead to a decrease in workplace productivity.
