William Dana Ewart who deals in farm implementation business in Belle Plaine, conceived the idea of setting up Link-Belt 125 years ago. He realized that the chain belt of the harvesters which were made of square links, gets worn out unevenly. Once these chains broke, the entire chain needed to be repaired that delayed harvesting. Therefore, he channeled all his efforts in creating a chain belt with detachable links. The motivation to innovate the link belt led to the establishing of Link-Belt Machinery Company in 1880 and the Link-Belt Engineering Company in 1888.

These unfledged These companies developed the first wide-gauge, steam-powered, coal handling clam shell crane which eventually developed into more lighter and versatile cranes which formed the base for all the future cranes and shovel designs. In 1906, the Company was established in Chicago, Illinois merging the efforts of the Link-Belt Machinery Company and the Lin-Belt Engineering Company.

In 1922, the company introduced new line of crawler mounted crane-shovels, which continuously grew, and by the late 1930s, the line of models ranged from ¾ yd to 2-1/5 yd capacity. In 1936, the The Company introduced power hydraulic controls known as Speed-O-Matic, which superseded all the other systems. In 1939, Link-Belt Company bought the Speeder Machinery Corporation and consolidated its machines with Speeders smaller machines to form Link-Belt Speeder Corporation located in Cedar Rapids, lowa.

In 1954, the company launched its chief model LS-98 which was the most successful pieces of construction equipment ever built. In 1967, the merger of FMC Corporation with the Company and Link-Belt Speeder formed the Construction Equipment Group of FMC Corporation. In 1986, the joint venture between FMC Corporation and Sumitomo Heavy Industries formed the Link-Belt Construction Equipment Company is vigorous, effective and very focused establishment with its headquarters in Lexington, Kentucky that is entirely owned auxiliary of Sumitomo Heavy Industries.

Chuck Martz as the President leads the company. Since 1994, Link-Belt has invested millions of dollars to improve and implement the principles of QCD (quality, cost, delivery) in every aspect of production. Link-Belt production system is based on Toyota's lean production system. The company works on the principle of improvement in quality resulting in waste reduction, efficient use of company resources and satisfying their customers.
