It is based on these main purposes of use that most truck manufacturers today design the vehicles. Each of these major truck categories has its own specific carrying and hauling capacities and while some are meant for carting lightweight articles, others are designed for carrying heavy loads from one location to another. Most pickup trucks designed today are constructed in size of automobiles and are primarily used for hauling and carrying light weight materials. Industrial semi-trailers, on the other hand, have enormous weight carrying capacities and are used for carrying heavy bulk goods on highways and transporting them from one city to another.

Trucks designed for carting agricultural materials like grains, cereals, fruits and vegetables have comparatively lesser weight carrying capacities than those designed for hauling industrial materials. As trucks used for construction works need to carry and lift heavy construction materials like mortar, cement and concrete they are usually structured having large weight carrying capacities. Similarly, trucks used for conveying industrial cargo and heavy goods like wood products, aluminum or steel dumps and industrial asphalt and petroleum have some of the highest carrying and hauling capacities.
