Dessert is a dish which is usually consumed after having main course. Dessert is derived from the French word “desservir” which means “to clear the table”. Desserts mostly consist of sweet food stuffs like pudding, ice creams, cakes, fruits, cookies.

Desserts at times can also be a baked dish like gratin. A typical lunch or dinner consists of three parts starters, main course and desserts. Therefore, dessert comes after completing the meal. In countries like India and UK, desserts are commonly known as sweet, afters or pudding and in other countries like Canada, Australia and Ireland it is referred as dessert.

As per Debrett's opinion pudding is the correct word to be used and dessert is the term which is to be applied only if the part of the meal contains fruit. He even states that sweet term is used to create the effect of conversation. The fact is that these words are used by high society or higher middle society in their speech or writing. Typically dessert means a dish in which fruits and sweet forms the main ingredient.

Afters or pudding were the words which were adopted by parents from American sources to describe desserts but nowadays youngsters prefer to use the word dessert. In earlier times people preferred to eat dry fruits and fruits after their lunch or dinner but currently desserts have gained great popularity.

Traditionally, sugar was not that cheap and its supply was also not abundant hence sweet was consumed by the people belonging to higher section of society. Presently desserts are becoming popular because cost of sugar has reduced and it is now easily found. Desserts are also consumed by some people as a main food. In some countries, shakes or any sweet beverages is also regarded as desserts.

In modern times, many hotels excel in desserts and there are some which only serve different types of desserts. It is often said that one can earn calories if desserts are consumed daily. But if desserts are consumed in a limit then it is manageable. There are numerous diet plans for such kind of people who don’t want to gain weight and at the same time want to have a flavor. Low-fat desserts are for them. Desserts
