While in older times, most furniture were made from high quality wood and were highly polished, in the modern times lighter materials like wrought iron are gradually capturing the furniture market. Other than serving the basic utilitarian purpose, furniture are also used for decorative purposes and making style statements.
Wooden or glass furniture, intricately carved, are often used to symbolize social class and elegance. At the same time, in modern households, the use of multi-purpose furniture is gradually becoming more and more the trend. While on one hand multi-purpose furniture save a lot of space, on the other, by eliminating the need to buy individual pieces, they prove more economic for the budget.
However, no matter furniture of what material is used, for their long-term, efficient and optimum usage, they have to be cleaned and maintained regularly. Today, in most furniture stores as well as in general department stores various dusters, polishes and varnishes are available for the easy and effective maintenance of our household and office furniture. Furniture made of different materials requires different types of cleansing and maintenance.
The easiest way to maintain good quality furniture is to use it with proper care and to keep it protected. Mirrors and glass surfaces are generally sprayed with special solutions prepared for their cleaning and then wiped with a piece of lint-free cloth to restore their original shine and reflecting capacity. Wooden furniture on the other hand requires a lot of attention and regular careful maintenance in order to maintain their shine and quality. While cleaning wooden furniture certain points have to be kept in mind.
Wood furniture should be cleaned only when there is an accumulation of wax or dirt. Especially, as the finish of gilt wood is soluble in water, it is best to carefully, and preferably professionally, dusted instead of cleaned with solutions. Before cleaning any wooden surface with a solution, it must first be checked whether the surface is stable enough to be cleaned with a cleaning or polishing agent. As some surfaces are sensitive to these cleaning agents, it is best to give them to a conservator for cleaning.
