US Congress Passed Pregnancy Discrimination Act Revision Made To Sex Discrimination Section


Pregnancy discrimination happens when the pregnant women is dismissed from work or not given any job. Pregnancy Discrimination's are also done on grounds of becoming pregnant or the plan to become expectant.

The general kinds of Pregnancy discrimination incorporates no employment because of noticeable pregnancy or probability of giving birth to a fetus, dismissed from the job subsequent to the maternity leave, dismissed as soon as the company is informed about the pregnancy and getting reduced wages because of pregnancy. Ever since 1978 in the United States the companies are lawfully obligated to offer leave pay, insurance, and further assistance to the employee who is unable to work due to any deformities or injury or any employee taking a medical leave .

This is restricted to corporations involving 15 or above 15 employees and this includes part-time as well as worker hired for limited time. Companies might show Pregnancy discrimination if they are bias towards working women and show irrational stereotype behavior towards pregnant mothers.

They might feel terrified that the rate of production will go down because of the employees’ nonattendance. The reason could also be that the employer might not have enough funds to provide other employees for working extra hours in place of pregnant employee who took a leave or cannot employ workers for hire.

The employer might also fire the expectant mother from a job as he supposes that the employee will need a lot of adjustments and a number of modifications will have to be done as she will come back for the job. Though the percentage rate of working women having children is above 70% but still Pregnancy discrimination is such kind of discrimination which is increasing rapidly at a great speed in the United States.

In the year 1978 the U.S. Congress passed the Pregnancy Discrimination Act. A revision was made to the sex discrimination section under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In the year 2002 California's Paid Family Leave insurance program also stated as Family Temporary Disability Insurance program provided joblessness disability reimbursement to help pregnant employees who take a leave for a born child.
