401k History 1978 Internal Revenue Code Employee Not Taxed IRS


The 401(k) is a popular retirement plan in the United States. The employers are mainly the sponsors of this plan. The 401k history can be traced back to the year 1978. In this year, the Congress first amended the Internal Revenue Code. Later it was called as section 401(k).

The 401k plans work under the Internal Revenue Code’s section 401(k). The 401k history states that under this section an employee is not directly taxed on the income they receive. The income is not received in form of direct compensation. The employees under this section get a deferred compensation.

The law was effective from the first day of the year 1980. The law was extremely popular and had a great impact on the firms. As a result, by the year 1983 most of the firms had implemented the 401k plans. The firms who had not implemented 401k plans were busy in completing the formalities required for implementing 401k plans.

The 401k history clearly reveals the effectiveness of the plan from its early years. More than 17,000 companies offered the 401k plans in the year 1984. The Congress was very careful about the implementation of the plan. For this reason, the Congress passed legislation in the same year. This legislation was passed for ensuring that the benefits of the plan are equal for everyone. It fixed a limit of deposit that can be made per year. It was fixed so that a high salaried employee cannot make more deposit for having more benefits.

One can read the 401k history to know the several revisions that has been made to the 401k plans. In 1998, legislation was again passed by the Congress regarding the 401k plans. This legislation empowered all the employees to invest a certain sum of money for 401k plans. The employer can ask for contribution till the employee does not declare his unwillingness to contribute.

The 401k history is quiet bright. Around 4, 38,000 companies had implemented the 401k plans by the year 2003. The plans were mainly made for the employees working in the executive grade. Later it proved to be beneficial for employees at all level. All the working classes could enjoy the benefit, as there was a limit for the investment.

The 401k plans were highly flexible which also helped in the popularity of these plans. The plans were highly popular because it was economical for the employers to implement 401k plans than giving defined benefits of pension to all the workers who retired from their firm. 401k history
