Edgar Allan Poe American Poet And Short Mystery Story Writer MS Found in a Bottle


Edgar Allan Poe is well known for his series of publications on horrid mystery novels. He is thought to be the pioneer of detective fiction writing. He is also considered to have made enough contribution to science fiction and other horror writings. He was the earliest known writer to make his livelihood through writing alone.

Edgar Allan Poe was born on January 19, 1809 as Edgar Poe in Boston, Massachusetts.
His father, David was an actor while her mother, Elizabeth was an actress. He was the second of the three siblings of the Poe family, the elder being his brother William and the younger was his sister Rosalie. His family was abandoned by his father who also passed away after a year. John Allan who was a merchant in Virginia adopted him.

Edgar was given the name Edgar Allan Poe by the Allan family, though they did not wholly adopt him. He married his 13 year old cousin Virginia Clemm but she died early. Her death gave Poe a jolt and aroused many of his writing.

Edgar Allan Poe went to University of Virginia to study languages but left after a short period. He left for Boston and lived on odd jobs. But with the worsening of his financial condition, he joined the US Army. During this time, he published his first book, which was a compilation of poetry of 40 pages. It was called Tamerlane and Other Poems.

Edgar Allan Poe came to New York and brought out his third compilation of poems that was named Poems. Soon his elder brother died of ill health. He dedicated himself to make a career in writing that was completely a new concept at that time. During this time, the copyright laws were in its infancy. There were widespread copies coming from the British works and American works, and his works were not paid for its due. Through the rest of his life, Poe had to live entreating for money.

Edgar Allan Poe now attempted writing prose. He wrote stories for the Philadelphia publication and also wrote the drama Politian, which was the only one of its type. His short story "MS. Found in a Bottle" led him to get award and helped him publish his stories in other publications. He soon became the assistant editor of Southern Literary Messenger that was brought out in Richmond.

In 1835, his poem "The Raven" was published in Baltimore. He passed away on October 7, 1849 when he was only 49 years. Though the cause is not known, it is believed to be his excessive consumption of alcohol. Edgar Allan Poe
