Reef Aquariums Stocked With Natural Food Are The Best Places To Keep Mandarin Fish

The Mandarin Fish or Synchiropus splendidus belonging to the family Callionymidae is commonly referred as a dragonet. Mandarins can be found in abundance around the Philippine Islands and in Western Australia.

The fishes thrive either in small groups or in pairs in the sandy areas between reef crests. The stunning body coloration coupled with a unique body shape has made Mandarin a popular choice in the marine aquarium. Blue is the dominant body color of this species although traces of green, purple, orange and yellow can be easily visible. The orange wavy lines on the blue background along with the additional colors make an amazing and eye- catching color combination.

An average hobbyist would find it a bit difficult to maintain this delicate fish in his aquarium. It is best to place Mandarins with peaceful and non- aggressive fishes or in a large aquarium where other rowdy members cannot perturb them very easily. The Mandarins can be maintained very well in the modern reef- type aquariums which are well decorated with rocks and plants. With this, the breeding of these fishes in the tanks are becoming very common.

The mandarins prefer to be fed from the bottom and they are fussy eaters too! These fishes have small mouth and so they are to be fed with finely- chopped or small food items. In aquariums filled with abundant live rock and plants, the Mandarins graze the substrate in search of natural food items like small worms, protozoa and small crustaceans like Amphipods, isopods and Mysids.

In that case, there is no need to supply any additional food. Even if you want to supply an additional food, it would consist of baby brine shrimp, frozen Mysis shrimp and adult brine shrimp. As mentioned earlier, the Mandarins feed from the bottom and so you need to turn off the water pumps to allow the food to the settle down at the bottom. But the presence of aggressive fishes in the same tank would prevent the Mandarins to reach to the bottom to get their food!

Mandarin is a scale-less fish whose body is covered with a slimy mucous coating which protects the fish from parasitic skin diseases. Heavy Metal based medications are a strict “No- No” because this would cause an excess production of slime that would in turn cause the fish to suffocate in their own body slime.

Breeding is an easy affair with the Mandarins. During the day, the male Mandarin would show no interest in a female Mandarin, but as soon as the tank lights are turned off, the male starts searching for his female mate. Both the fishes start circling each other and rise in the water column. This is continued till sperm and eggs are released in the water. After this, both of them part their ways until the next night comes!

The eggs are planktonic and so they need to be removed before being eaten up by the fishes. The eggs hatch within 18 hours to give birth to Mandarin larvae which are about 1 mm in length. Rotifers are usually not considered as the first food for the Mandarin larvae although some particular strains of rotifer might be used as the first food.

While you are buying Mandarins, keep a close watch on the bellies of the Mandarins. A sunken belly would mean a starving Mandarin. Mandarins must be kept separately in another container because they can produce profuse amount of slime which can affect other fishes adversely. Even if you are an average hobbyist, then also you can afford to maintain these fishes successfully in the reef aquariums where the fishes can have the feeling of living in a natural environment!
