Cats have various breeds, shapes and colors but the Black Cats hold a place of interest among other feline creatures. Both female and male cats can have black fur. According to the legends of Western mythology, black cats have an association with ill omens and many tales of horror and mystery have been written on them.

In the medieval times, Black Cats were linked with the evil and witchcraft. However, not all traditions look down upon the cats as a sinister and ominous symbol. In ancient Egypt, this animal was worshiped and killing of cat led to death. The Egyptians mummified the body of the cats after their expiry. The animal was introduced to Europe by the Romans.

In all nations barring Ireland and UK, a black cat crossing the way is considered ominous. The church also sees the Black Cats as the companions of witches. Some of the old legends associate the black cats with the Satan himself. Due to such beliefs, the Christians hunted and killed black cats in the medieval times on occasions like Easter.

The notion of evil and ominous things associated with black cats has grown deep rooted in the common people in most of the places. This is one of the reasons why the pet owners are not very eager about adopting black cats as pets.

Other European countries also have several superstitions related to black cats. The people of Scotland consider the sight of a black cat on the porch as a symbol of prosperity. Even in a developed country like the USA, superstitions and myths regarding the Black Cats abound. Some people still believe in the notion that the bones of black cats contain magical charms. That explains why the demand of the bone of the animal is still high and there is a black market existing in the Internet.

The Irish people consider a black cat crossing the path in moonlight as a sure fire sign of an impending epidemic illness. According to an ancient Italian folklore, if a black cat lay on a patient’s bed, he may not live long. Many centuries ago in England, the wives of fisher men believed that keeping black cats at their houses while their spouses were in sea as it would keep them safe from dangers.
