
Frank McCourt is one of those prominent Irish authors who have influenced and enhanced not only the Irish literature but also the international literature by publishing some masterpieces. This famous literary figure was honored with some prestigious awards such as “National Book Circle Award” and “Pulitzer Prize” in 1996 and 1997 respectively for his outstanding contribution in Irish Literature.
This well-known writer, Frank McCourt, was born on August 19, 1930. At the initial stage of his of childhood, he had to undergo some trials and tribulations but he later overcame those problems successfully. He had to put an end to his academic career when he was just thirteen years old for searching jobs, as he was the sole earning member of his family at that time.
When he reached his adolescence he ventured to United States and started pursing his academic career from the New York University. He earned a master degree in 1958 from the Brooklyn College. After the completion of his academic career, he resolved to pursue his career as a teacher of English in Stuyvesant High School and McKee High School, which are located in New York City.
He served as a teacher, continuously, for thirty years. During his stint as a teacher, he had earned huge respect from the students. At the later stage of his career, he had joined in the American Federation of Teachers. He had written many books in his illustrious literary career.
“Angel’s Ashes” which was published 1996, is one of his popular books. In this book, he had imbibed some autobiographical elements and this increased the attraction of this book. This book helped him to grab the prestigious “National Book Critics Circle Award”. “‘Tis” is another memorable book of Frank McCourt, which is the continuation of his earlier book “Angel’s Ashes”. In the previous book, Frank McCourt has described various events of his childhood in Limerick. In “’Tis”, he has depicted the changes that came in his life after immigrating to United States.
In 2005, Frank McCourt had published another book “Teacher Man”. In this book, he has described the problems of young and inexperienced teachers who must have to teach their students, despite facing odd situation. He has incorporated some of his professional experience as a teacher in this book and it has made this book worth of reading. His minute description and his keen observation made this book a unique piece of literary composition. His latest book is “Angela and the Baby Jesus” which was published in 2007.
