Juvenile law is meant for young children who perform criminal acts or break the law. Most of the legal systems in the world have certain juvenile laws which help in the treatment of the juveniles. There are juvenile detention centers which are essentially designed for the juvenile delinquents.

Juvenile delinquency is a crime that is committed by young people or minors who fall below the age group of eighteen. The crimes can be either violent or non-violent. Debates have been raised on the issue whether such children can be called a criminal as there are questions about his responsibility.

In many cases it is said that he or she cannot be held responsible for his or her own action. There are external influences which actually motivate the child to behave either in a positive or a negative manner. Some of the circumstances which actually compel the young person to commit such a crime include issues like social institutions, peer pressure or abandonment.

Juvenile law is different in various countries. In United States a person who is yet to reach the age of majority is known as a juvenile delinquent. The Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Act was passed in 1974 in United States. The federal government sought to unify the laws that were especially meant for the juvenile delinquents.

The Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention was created which helped in many ways like providing funds and gathering national statistics on the rate of crime in United States. It is known that all those young people who are charged with “status” offences like truancy or found with tobacco or alcohol is “deinstitutionalized”. This means that people with this status cannot be detained by the police for enquiries or confined.

According to the juvenile law the young people who are arrested are kept in segregation from adults. It is known that neither the juvenile delinquent will be given food by an adult, nor can he walk by a room where an adult is interrogated.

Most of the juvenile delinquents are not imprisoned or put inside the jail. There is a six-hour exception when the young people are kept for identification, interrogation or processing. There are many theorists and criminologists who are of the opinion that crime is interconnected to poverty. A society with inequality will definitely fall prey to such a situation.
