What is frostbite? It refers to the medical condition in which the skin and tissues gets damaged on exposure to too much cold. The constriction of the blood vessels, which is near to the skin takes place at a temperature that is at or below 0º C (32ºF). It helps in the preservation of the temperature of the body.

The answer to what is frostbite is that it is basically a protective strategy that avoids the minimization of blood flow in few parts of the body to extremely low levels owing to very cold weather or due to the exposure of body to cold for a relatively bigger span of time. There are high chances of tissue injury through tissue freezing at the time when cold temperature and poor blood flow happens to turn up together. What is frostbite? It is also known as "frostnip" during the earlier stages. There are high chances of frostbites on mountains or high altitudes consisting of snow. When the treatment is not met at the proper time it tends to stay permanently. The damage of the nerves takes place as a result of less oxygen availability to these areas. The parts which are frostbitten looses their color and then turn purplish and finally black. When too much damage is made to the nerves then the frostbitten areas looses all kinds of feelings.

It involves a number of risk factors as peripheral neuropathy as well as diabetes. It can be seen in the form of discolored skin with burning sensations. There is also numbness to a complete or certain extent and too much of pain. At the time when the areas that are affected and blood vessels get damaged majorly then gangrene may turn up and amputation becomes essential and this is what is frostbite. The areas that are frostbitten feels cold on touching them.

Frostbite is generally caused by wind chill, bad circulation, wet clothes and too much of cold. Excessive smoking, alcohol intake, fatigue, some medications, tight clothing or boots are the factors that contribute to what is frostbite. The relief for the frostbite in feet can be achieved by submerging the feet in warm saline water. frostbite
