China Mieville Writer Weird Fiction King Rat Perdido Street Station Arthur C. Clarke Award Winner

China Mieville is an extremely talented and award winning contemporary fiction writer who prefers to categorize his writing as weird fiction. Some of the critics believe that he is influenced by the 20th century horror and pulp writers like H. P. Lovecraft.

He has an interest in politics and is involved with the Socialist Workers Party. Apart from writing fiction books he has also penned a book on international law and Marxism. ‘King Rat’, his debut novel, marked his entry into the literary scene and it was followed by a series of other splendid novels that consolidated his position. His debut novel won the nominations for the coveted Bram Stoker award and the International Horror Guild. Mieville’s latest work is ‘Kraken’ which is awaiting a 2010 release.

China Mieville was born in the year 1972 in Norwich. However, his young years were spent in a northwest London city named Willesden. During his childhood, his parents parted ways and he was deprived of the joys of growing up in a happy family. He received his education in Oakham School.

For one year, he taught English in Egypt during his late adolescence. It is in this phase of his life that he got interested in the Middle East and Arabian life and culture. He was a meritorious student and went on to achieve a B.A degree from Cambridge in Anthropology and Master’s degree and doctorate from the coveted London School of Economics.

In his prolific career, China Mieville drew inspiration from pulp science fiction. The author himself has admitted his liking for the works of fantasy and horror writers like Michael Moorcock, Charles Williams, J.G. Ballard, Tim Powers, M. John Harrison and Thomas Disch. His inclination for leftist politics has been reflected in his works to some extent.

However, the writer has denied the inclusion of political elements in his writing strongly. He feels that it is his inherent love for the weird and fantasy based themes that prompt him to write books and he has no intention to promote his political ideologies in his work.

China Mieville has achieved considerable fame and publicity in his short but prolific career. His first novel received rave reviews and accolades from the readers and the critics alike. Its successor named ‘Perdido Street Station’ fetched him the esteemed Arthur C. Clarke Award besides winning nomination for some more awards. The same trend was repeated with the publication of his 3rd and 4th novel named ‘The Scar’ and ‘Iron Council’, respectively. China Mieville
