Alex Haley, who is considered one of the most prolific Afro American writers, was born in Ithaca in New York in1921. His father Simon Halley was a professor and took part in the First World War. In the year 1939, Alex enlisted himself in the military and started his job of Coast Guard from the mess hall. This was the phase when Haley started scripting stories. He was shifted to Petty Officer First Class in the area of Journalism after the Second World War. He bid adieu to Army in 1959. In his service life, he got many awards and honors for his contribution.
