We have already come to know about the popular German saying,"Breakfast like an emperor, lunch like a king, and dine like a beggar." This is not limited to the words alone and breakfast is truly a major event in Germany. A typical German breakfast would consist of ham, soft- bolied eggs, bread- rolls, jam and butter. Cereals are also gaining popularity day by day. There are regional variations in the area of the choice of food items for breakfast and some German Breakfasts might include meat spreads, cheeses, granola, fresh as well as stewed fruits and yogurt.
We can designate a typical German breakfast or a Frühstück
to lie somewhere between a deli platter and a continental breakfast. Breads of more than 200 varieties are available in the German market and these serve as one of the main components of a German breakfast. Crusty bread rolls called Brötchen are flavored by sprinkling poppy seeds, caraway seeds and sesame seeds after which these bread rolls are baked in the oven. Sausage happens to be a compulsory item in a German breakfast.
In fact, sausage is imbibed in the German culture as a whole. The sausage consumption per year for an average German amounts to 67 pounds which is equivalent to the weight of a nine year old boy! The sausages appear in 1500 varieties in the form of links and patties and have a more processed look like that of the hotdogs. The white color sausages of Germany prove the presence of strict regulations on the use of additives.
Pancakes are also common in a German breakfast. We have come to know about German Pancakes from some of the recipe books but have had different opinions about the exact nature of a German pancake. Some say that it is crepe- like and some others say that an official pancake of Germany is a fluffy one that is baked in the oven. But it is certain that Confectioners’ sugar, lemon juice with fruit fillings and toppings would bring out the taste of a German pancake.
As mentioned earlier, cereals are also becoming popular in German breakfasts and Muesli consisting of seeds, grains and dried fruits is one such breakfast cereal. This is similar to granola without being baked or browned. These food items, when supplemented with beverages like tea, coffee, fruit juices and hot chocolate would make up a perfect German Breakfast. I know that you might be thinking that it would have been a little helpful for you if I could have provided a few German breakfast recipes. In fact, I have the recipes of German Apple Pancakes and that of German sausages in store to help you out.
The delicious German Apple pancakes are the easiest ones to cook. Two cups of Bisquick's Pancake Mix, a can of apple pie filling, a cup full of water, butter and Sour cream are all that you need to make German Apple Pie Pancakes. After you make the pancake batter, add vanilla flavor to the batter. Add butter to the frying pan and heat it after which pour the pancake batter into the pan and have your pancake cooked. Serve the pancake after you top it with apple pie filling and sour cream.
To make a German Sausage dish, you have to start with mixing thoroughly one pound of ground beef, one pound of ground pork, one cup of rolled uncooked oats, pepper, thyme, sage, salt, summer savory, salt and water together. After you form a mixture, make two rolls each with six inches length. These need to be wrapped airtight and refrigerated for six hours. After the expiry of this time, take the two rolls out and form six one – inch patties by flattening them. You have to fry both the sides of the patties in medium heat for five minutes.
But German Breakfast does not stop here. There is a concept of second breakfast prevalent in Southern Germany, in Bavaria. Even certain special dishes are served at the second breakfast at 10:30 in the morning. The second breakfast is a bit lighter and consists of coffee, pasties like Monkey Bread and sausages served with sweet mustard, wheat beer and pretzels. If you are traveling to Germany, make sure you manage your travel budget well, otherwise your decision to taste each type of delicious German breakfast can shake your pockets too!
