Make sure you head out today to grab your free donuts.
Today, June 6th, 2008 marks the National Donut Day. If you’re in the mood for
some sweets, grab a donut from any shop and enjoy. Popular chain donut store
Krispy Creme is offering one free donut for its customers. Make sure you ask
around for the locations. Only participating stores are doing the offer.
If you happen to come close to locations such as Southwest
Airlines in Dallas airports or Kansas City, they’re giving away free donuts
in regards to the national holiday. Basically, wherever you are, you'll happen
to find yourself a place for great delicious donuts. On the other hand, top
chain Dunkin Donut stores are not participating in the program.
Another name for donut is doughnut. A doughnut is a sweet,
fried piece of dough. The most well known type of doughnuts is round ring shape
and filled doughnut. Ring donuts look similar to a bagel with toppings on top.
The filled donuts are filled with jam, or jelly, or any crème. Other flavors
include strawberry, chocolate, or vanilla.
There are many historical theories about the doughnut.
Some say they are introduced in North American by Dutch immigrants. These Dutch
were known to increase the menu of American deserts. These deserts were
cookies, pies, and cobbler. The Dutch called these doughnuts "oily
cakes."
Another theory came from Hansen Gregory. He claimed to have
invented the ring shaped donut. In 1847, he boarded a ship and was dissatisfied
with the greasiness and raw middle of the doughnuts. While complaining about
the doughnut, he punched a hole in the center and told the theory to his
mother. As a chef, his mother baked the donuts and expressed it to be her son's
theory.
Donuts vary from region to region. From China to Israel, donuts are serving in
different styles and taste. However, there are no historical similarities between the
doughnut and the bagel.
