Acme Markets is the name given to the supermarket chain that is located in Philadelphia and has its owners as Supervalu. The foundation of this company was laid in the year 1891 in South Philadelphia through the efforts of Samuel Robinson and Robert Crawford.
Acme Markets currently carries out the operation of nearly 130 supermarkets that are based in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Maryland. The logo of Acme Markets was put to use till the offset of 1990's and this logo is still visible on a number of products belonging to Acme brand. Robinson and Crawford turned up with the merger of Acme Markets with four grocery chains of Philadelphia in the year 1917 and the resultant company was called as American Stores. This company also went ahead and took over Alpha Beta stores that is situated in California in 1961.
Further the American Stores was taken by Skaggs Drug Centers in 1979 and its headquarters was shifted to Salt Lake City, Utah. The year 1984 witnesses the acquiring of Jewel Companies, Inc., by American Stores and this Jewel company was comprised of big chains like Eisner Foods in downstate Illinois and Indiana, Jewel and Jewel-Osco in the Chicago area, Star Market in New England, Osco Drug in the Midwest, Northwest, and New England, Sav-On Drugs in California, Nevada, and Texas as well as Buttrey Food & Drug in Montana and other Western states. Albertsons took possessions of Acme Markets in the year 2000 and in turn the acquiring of Albertsons was done by Supervalu in 2006.
Acme Markets is regarded as the biggest retailer of food and drug in the Philadelphia market. It faces competition from a number of chains running locally as Pathmark, ShopRite, Superfresh, Thriftway/Shop 'N Bag, Wal-Mart Supercenters and Giant.
It also facilitates online grocery shopping and in the year 2004, it was the first one to turn up with the introduction of self-checkout stands, the place where the shoppers are able to go through scanning and bagging of their groceries. The loyalty card of Acme Markets is named as Acme SuperCard or"Acme Card" and helps the customers to take advantage of savings which is not possible without the card. A number of Acme locations are coming up with hot foods bars in 2008.
