2000 Film Billy British Independent Movie Awards Winner

Stephen Daldry directed the film titled Billy Elliot in the year 2000. The same was written by Lee Hall. This 2000 Film Billy stars Jamie Bell as an 11-year old young lad. He plays an aspiring dancer in the movie. The film is set in the fictional town of Everington in the real County Durham, UK.

The story was adapted to the West End stage as Billy Elliot the Musical in 2005. Other stars of this 2000 Film Billy includes Gary Lewis who plays the role of a coal miner father of the little boy Billy, Jamie Draven as Billy’s elder brother and Julie Walters as his dance instructor. Billy is shown as a young boy living in a state of poverty. Though both father and brother were miners during the UK miners’ strike (1984-85), they wish to see Billy growing up to become a boxer champion. His father is an ardent admirer of Ken Buchanan – the real life world boxing champion and wishes that his son one day will become a legendry figure like him. However, Billy’s interest is in music – that’s a passion he seems to have inherited from his late mother.

The father soon gets the realization that his young son lacks the interest and real talent for this sport. This happened one fine day when Billy was taken to the boxing gym by his father. Part of the boxing gym is used by a ballet class in 2000 Film Billy. He is drawn in by the dance instructor and this marks the beginning! He secretly starts taking ballet class with her help and since then there was been no looking back for him.

He missed an important audition for the Royal Ballet School since his brother was arrested during that time. This news of missed opportunity is duly communicated at his residence by his dance instructor. Both his father and brother become outraged about the very thought of him becoming a professional ballet dancer. However, having seen him danced once, his father is assured that ballet is his future. Further in the 2000 Film Billy, we see him moving to London all on his own at the age of 11 to attend the school.

The concluding scene of the 2000 Film Billy shows his father and brother both arriving at the ballet to see their grown up and mature Billy take up the stage to perform the lead in Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake. We see signs of inspiration drawn from A.J.Cronin’s novel, The Stars Look Down in some parts of this movie.

2000 Film Billy did extremely well. This is proved by the fact that the film was nominated and won awards worldwide. It bagged the British Independent Film Awards, UK for Best British Independent Film, Best Director, Newcomer and Screenplay. Billy Elliot
