The city of Hobart is the capital of Tasmania and is the most populated city of the Australian island state. It was founded in the year 1803, as a penal colony. The city is considered amongst the oldest city of Australia. It is the financial and administrative hub of Tasmania.

The capital of Tasmania, Hobart is located in the Southeast area of the state and on the estuary of the Derwent River. The city occupies a total area of 1357.3 square kms with a total population of 200,525 people as per census 2006. The city possesses a picturesque skyline, which is dominated by the view of Mount Wellington.

The city is surrounded by numerous vineyards including the famous Moorilla Estate at Berriedale. The city is famous internationally for its universities and colleges. The city is host to the main campus of the University of Tasmania and several colleges like Christ College, Jane Franklin Hall and St. John Fisher College.

The capital of Tasmania is internationally famous as the finishing point of the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race. The race starts in Sydney on Boxing Day and is celebrated as the part of Hobart Summer Festival. This food and wine festival begins just after Christmas and ends in mid-January. The city also serves as the finishing point of the annual Targa Tasmania rally car event.

The capital of Tasmania is home to the first legal casino of Australia. The 17-storey Wrest Point Hotel Casino was opened in the year 1973, is a nationally recognized icon. The city also holds many major national and international music events. It also possesses the distinction of having the oldest theatre of Australia. The citys international tourism results in having a large number of restaurants serving exotic cuisines like Chinese, Thai, Greek, Italian, Indian and Mexican. Capital of Tasmania
