Animal Cruelty Physical And Mental Torture Welfare Measures Freedom

Animals are living, thinking and feeling beings and cruelty to them can be meted out by only those people who do not have a heart. Animal cruelty is on a steep rise and before the doomsday arrives something has to be done about it. First of all, all animal lovers should make some concrete efforts towards introducing and conserving animal welfare. The basic idea of animal welfare is that animals should not suffer any physical or mental torture, more so if they under the supervision of human beings.

The animal welfare principles that fight animal cruelty are based on five issues. The first issue that has to be addressed is based on satisfying the basic biological necessities of an animal. Animals should be given adequate food and water. They should be nourished well. One should realize that hunger and thirst experienced by all beings is the same and it is very inhuman to starve a being. The next thing is that animals should not be kept in unfavorable environments. They should not be housed in cages that are too small. They should be given adequate space to move about and should have plenty of fresh air to breathe. They should not be subjected to any sort of physical torture.

In order to make animals perform as super-animals many animal performance units try to put them under stringent training conditions under which animals suffer a lot of physical and emotional pain. Punishment, if at all given, should be done with grace and dignity taking care that the animal does not suffer any physical or mental injury, or animal cruelty in any form. The living conditions of the animals should also be taken care of. They should be hygienic and should be sufficiently equipped to counter attack any prevalent or predicted diseases.

They should be given the freedom to express species-specific behavior. It is a very sad thing to note that human beings try a bit too much to make their animals look sophisticated, hence snatching away their natural way of living. Their environment should nurture love and friendliness. No animal including human beings can survive in an environment that nurtures fear and distress, an environment that nurtures animal cruelty. Hitlerism is a flop concept when applied on animals too. The basic idea is to treat an animal with respect and dignity. Pets should be treated as though they are ones own children.

Animal cruelty was first taken action against in 1822, by Richard Martin, the British MP. He founded the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. In 1866 American Society for the prevention of cruelty to animals was established in New York. The American Veterinary Medical Association is another such organization. Apart from these formal organizations, the concept of animal welfare came into being during the Indus Valley Civilization period and it was emphasized in the religious texts of the world.
