The very first utterance of the word Newborn brings in a series of lovely images of an infant in front of our eyes. From here the journey of life starts. The term is further used for infants below one year of age. He is basically a minor in legal terms. After the birth and less than one month it is regarded as newborn infant or neonate. The definition of a newborn also comprises premature infants, post mature infants and full term newborns.

When a Newborn tries to take first step in this world approximately from twelve to thirty six months they are called toddlers. The look of all newborn is more or less similar with protruding belly and shoulder and hips a bit narrow. If a birth is of full term the weight ranges from seven and half lbs (3.2 kgs) to 5.5 lbs (2.7 kgs) the length of a normal new born varies from 14 to 20 inches. But in case of premature birth the weight and length can vary. The head of the newborn is proportionally large than the rest of the body. At the time of birth it is often observed that the skull has not been transformed into fully into bone that looks like some soft spot which is called fontanels.

At the time of birth the color of the skin of the Newborn is grayish to dusky blue. But with process of breathing the color turns to normal. The newborn may also have Mongolian spots, various other birthmarks, mainly on the wrists, hands, ankles, and feet. Many changes have been take place after the birth of a child, the looks often dramatically changes an unattractive baby can be turned into very cute one.

The feeling and senses of a Newborn is a matter of great concern and understanding. As they are soft and supple so their response too is mainly directed towards the caressing, cuddling and soft stroking gestures. They like massage and warm bath; they appease themselves by sucking their thumb, because sucking is very natural to the babies. Their way of communication is by crying. They are attracted towards the sharp contrasting colors and complex pattern to their eyes. Even they pretty interested in the face of other human being or newborn.

Soft human voice especially mothers voice is very arresting to them. Even they respond on the taste of bitter, sour, sweet and salty. The sense of smell develops in the first week of the birth so they can distinguish the smell of mother to other woman.
