The peak of the British Empire and the British Industrial Revolution was achieved during the Victorian era, i.e. during the rule of Queen Victoria between 1837 and 1901. During this period several state of art constructions took place, which followed the Victorian architecture. Those houses are called as Victorian homes. These Victorian homes were built in the United States and Canada. Often they were three storied buildings with an octagonal or rounded tower, a wraparound porch and great attention were aid to their perfection in architecture.

The Victorian age was the time when great advancement and innovation in manufacturing took place. The machines made it possible to create ornamental features like molding. The Victorian homes are of many types, some of the most prominent Victorian architectures are: Queen Anne style home, Eastlake-Stick style, Gothic Revival homes, Italianate style, Mansard style, Shingle style and Romanesque style.

During late 1870-1900 the Queen Anne style Victorian homes became popular. These houses have bright exterior colors, complicated roofline, expansive porches that wrap around the front side of the house, large bay windows and round towers. The wooden stick work decoration was there in Eastlake-Stick style of Victorian homes. Arched windows are mostly seen in Gothic Revival homes, which were constructed in stones.

The steep roofs and irregular shaped houses were found in Italianate style of Victorian homes. Inspired by the Paris architecture during the reign of Napoleon III, the Mansard or the Second Empire Style of homes was established. These homes have high, boxy mansard roofs (roofs that slope on all four sides, with each side divided into a gentle upper slope and a steeper lower slope).

These are American homes with European style. There were less ornamented informal types of homes shaped like Queen Anne houses with wide wrap-around porches, these types of houses are Shingle homes. There were some other types of Victorian homes constructed of rough-hewn stone with castle-like features; these are known as Romanesque style homes. These homes have round towers and large porches.

All these were about the external architectures of the Victorian homes. From inside they have Bay windows, Iron Railings, Flemish brick bonding, Patterns in the brickwork, Stained glass in doorways and windows, Decorations on the walls and Roofs made of slate. Many of the Victorian homes were very comfortable with central heating and hot water tap. The wealthy Victorians decorated their home in latest styles with heavy curtains, flowery wallpaper, carpets and rugs, ornaments, well made furniture, paintings and plants.
