Feminist Art Movement Lavonia Fontana Miranda July And Beth Stryker


Feminist art movement came into being as women were always stopped from participating in the field of art. For decades women have been praised by men for their beauty and it is for this reason they are portrayed in pictures. Women have been an inspiration for many artists and have also been worshipped as goddess. But the examples of female sculptures or painters are very few. Nevertheless, they gave a lot of effort in their work in spite of facing the problems in order to sell their paintings.

Before feminist art movement came into existence women were discouraged so that they could not participate in painting. However in the medieval period women started securing their position in the field of art due to some important cultural changes. People stated recognizing them in the field of art. Some of the female artists even got international fame. One such cultural change was the shift towards humanism. This attitude showed the dignity of people and was the basic thinking of renaissance. This gradually upgraded the position of women.

Before the introduction of the feminist art movement women faced problem in the training process as an artist that included training in calculation, ancient art, and study of the human body. The training also included nude male models and corpses for realistic painting and sculpting. But females were excluded from this training and so could not produce realistic painting which earned more money and prestige than other paintings.

The female artists who received recognition before the feminist art movement were generally nuns or daughter of a painter. Painter Lavonia Fontana and portrait painter Catharina van Hem Essen were the females who received recognition in this field. In the twentieth century the field of art witnessed great changeovers. The artist with the thought of women liberation movement played a great role in changing the scenario of women artist.

The new age media also provided a great support to the feminist art movement in this millennium. The range of art during this period got widened and included video art, time based art, digital art, performance art, online art, and conceptual art installation. Some female artist like Miranda July, Beth Stryker Adrianne Wortzel and others attempted traditional art form to new media art. Feminist art movement started in 1960 and continued till 1970. This period also shows the effort to create a position of females in the field of art. Feminist Art Movement
