Generally an annual event, a family reunion, occurs on a particular day every year in order to keep an extended family closer together. However some reunions may take place only on rare occasions. Usually, family reunion involves get together of survivors of great-grandparents, grandparents and up for a meal, some discussion and recreation. It assists, advises and represents more than 220 family history societies. The FEEFHS (Federation of East European Family History Societies) was set up in 1992 as an umbrella organization that supports family research. The Canadian Federation of Genealogical and Family History Societies (CanFed) are working with Canadian born families.

Traditional reunion of family activities generally comprise of an early evening dinner or an afternoon lunch and program featuring poetry reading, community contributions, music, educational achievements, honorary recognition of elders, song and history recitals. It mostly consist of Historical Skits comprising of reenactments that focus on pivotal points in a familys history, Story Telling which brings to life tales of ancestors and their achievements, Genealogy Tours which takes the family on an exciting tour of significant genealogical places and also their homestead, and Genealogy Presentations in which vintage artifacts and historic documents are presented that helps in identifying historic events, timelines, locations of ancestors and economic status.

In 1985, a public announcement was made for creating an awareness of a increasing trend of runaway children and newly formed companies to assist in reuniting families of runaways, the Congress by House Joint Resolution 64 has dedicated the period between 12th May, Mothers Day and 16th June, Father's Day as reunion of family Month. Although, August has been dubbed as National Family Reunion Month by some commercial organizations, several social groups including churches consider July as the National Family Reunion Month. November 21-24 has been declared as Family Reunion Planning Week by a family values awareness group, which was set up in 2005 focusing on traditional family reunion planning and genealogy.
