Founded in the year 1938, ATB Financial is a full service financial institution and crown corporation under the ownership of Government of Alberta. The company is headquartered in Edmonton, Alberta. It is considered the largest Alberta based financial institution.
The primary services provided by the ATB Financial are financial services and wealth management. The companys wealth management services are provided under the title ATB Investor Services or ATBIS. The company provides financial services to more than 600,000 people. It has more than 157 branches and 134 agencies and provides services to 244 communities in Alberta.
The ATB Financial is the largest Alberta based financial institution. The company is not a chartered bank and is totally regulated by the Government of Alberta. It is govered under the authority of the Alberta Treasury Act, Chapter A-37.9, 1997, and Treasury Branches Regulation 187/97. The company is one of the fifteen financial institutions which is included in Canadas Large Value Transfer System.
The ATB Financial was founded in the year 1938, by the first Social Credit ministry under the guidance of William Aberhart. The earlier attempts by provincial government to place Albertas banks under its control were thwarted by the federal government. On 29th September, 1938, the first Alberta Treasury Bench was opened in the Rocky Mountain House.
The ATB Financial is considered as one of the most important surviving remembrance os the social credit economic policies in Alberta. The company was reformed in the 1990s with the intention of turning into a complete competitive financial institution. The company was turned into a provincial crown corporation formally in 1997. From then, the company is run by a board of directors who are appointed by the Lieutenant- Governor of Alberta.
In January 2002, the company adopted the Moniker of ATB Financial. Its services are available through its 244 Automated Banking Machines (ABMs) throughout Alberta,and also through internet and telephone. It has a workforce of higher than 4,500 associates who provide personal and business financial services, corporate financial services and investor services.
ATB Financial also offers diverse financial services in membership with organizations such as Canadian Payments Association, Master Card Canada etc. One of the most active sectors of the company includes the financing of the farms and the ranches of Alberta. They are believed to be the leaders in farm-financing in Alberta. The Agri-business and Forestry constitutes the major percentage of the institutions business.
