Patrick Moore Knighted Astronomer Researcher Radio TV Presenter


Sir Alfred Patrick Caldwell-Moore better known as Patrick Moore is an eminent astronomer. He attained immense popularity as a writer, researcher, radio commentator and television presenter. He was knighted in 2001 and was also awarded the BAFTA Award for his services to television.

Patrick Moore was born on 4th march, 1923 in Pinner, Middlesex, England. His father was Capt. Charles Trachsel Caldwell-Moore and his mother Gertude was an artist. His interest in astronomy at the tender age of six and he proved his worth by being elected to the British Astronomical Association by the age of 11. He served as a navigator in RAF Bomber Command from 1940 to 1945.

After the Second World War, Patrick Moore returned to his Sussex home and set up a telescope to study the Moon. He is regarded as the specialist in lunar observation and he became one of the earliest observers of the Transient lunar phenomena. In 1959, the Soviets took extensive help of his extensive research on Moon. He was also involved with the NASA Apollo space missions in their lunar mapping.

Patrick Moore became a TV presenter in 1957. He presented, The Sky at Night, a program on astronomy enthusiasts on BBC television. He is named in the Guinness Book of Records as the longest serving TV presenter for this show. BBC broadcasted a special issue on 6th May 2007, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the program. He currently hosts the program from his residence due to his arthritis.

Patrick Moores command on the astronomy has resulted in 70 books being written by him on this subject. He was appointed as the Director of the Armagh Planetarium in 1965, a post he held till 1968. In order to mark his 50th anniversary, Patrick solely produced a DVD titled, The Astronomical Patrick Moore.

Patrick Moore has been garnered with several honors during his entire career. Some of the most prestigious moments of his life include election as a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society in the year 1945, winning a BAFTA Award for his TV work and being the Vice President of Sussex Junior Chess Association.

Patrick Moore had one and only love of his life with his fiancée, a nurse, who was killed in a bomb explosion in the Second World War. He could never forget the tragic incident and decided to stay single. Moore has gained immense recognition on TV and is popular even with the people, who are not connected to astronomy.
