Newtons First Law About Relationship Of Forces On Body And Motion

Sir Isaac Newton was the famed physicist who had given the ground breaking laws of motion in the year 1687 that gave us the relationship of the forces on the body and the motion, and formed the base for all the problems in Rest and Motion. There are three laws of motion that had been given by Sir Newton, among them the Newtons First Law talks about the inertia of motion.

The Newtons First Law states that A physical body will remain at rest, or continue to move at a constant velocity, unless an unbalanced net force acts upon it. It can be said in a simplified version that unless and until some external force is applied on the body that is either in the state of rest or in a state of motion, provided the surface it is traveling is without friction, they will continue to be in that state.

Newtons First Law is also known as the law of Inertia of Motion. This law signifies that when an object is in a state of rest, it will continue to be in the state of rest till such time when a force is acting on it. Same could be said about a body that is in a state of frictionless motion. Unless the body is supplied with a force from exterior, hindering force in the opposite direction or force in the same direction, the body will continue to move undisturbed.

An example can be given to prove Newtons First Law. Suppose a glass is taken. A card board in the shape of a square is placed on the top of the glass and above the card board a coin is placed. It is seen that if, without disturbing or touching the coin, the card board is pulled away, then the coin, without moving away with the card board, falls into the glass. This is because the coin was in the state of rest and n force was applied on it, it did not move when the board was removed quickly and had so fallen into the glass.

Another example of Newtons First Law is the people traveling in a car. The people traveling inside a car are in the state of motion along with the car. Now if the car is suddenly braked, all of them lunge forward. This is because the people are in a state of motion corresponding to the road. When the car stops suddenly, they continue in their state of motion and so they come forward with a jerk.

Newtons First Law of motion was thought about by Chinese philosopher Mo Tzu, Muslim philosophers Alhazen and Avicenna and René Descartes but did not give any experimental proof for the theory. Newton laws
