The correctional officer is a person who works hard to correct the characters of the people who have wronged and those who have broken the law. They are the people who are in charge of the jails and uphold the law and control all the functions of the prison or the jail. They also work in some of the other forms where security of custody is required.

The Correctional Officer is also known in a few other names such as the Corrections Officer, Detention Officer, Jail Guard, Prison Guard, Prison Warden or the Prison Officer. All these names that are given to the post directly state the meaning of the work they do for a living. Their work is sort of humanitarian as they bring the people who have gone to the wrong side of the law, change their mentality and bring them to the right track.

The Correctional Officer is the in-charge of the supervision, security, safety and the proper maintenance of the jails and the prison and all the people who are in them. These people are employed by the Government for the security of the jails. Some of the other forms of security that offer the jobs of correctional officers are private prisons. They maintain the discipline and law within the places that are full of people who are there as they had broken the law.

The correctional Officer also takes good care of the people who are in their custody, control them and try to change their habit of breaking the law. Some of the people who are taken to the custody of these people had been arrested and are to be produced to Court of Law, have been convicted by committing some criminal activity and have been served a sentence to remain in Jail for a period of time.

The major duties of the correctional Officer include works like the maintenance of law and order in the institution they are working in, enforcement of the rules and regulations of the place on the inmates, searching of the cells and the inmates for things that are not allowed to be in there, if some inmate is misbehaving then they are to be reported against, if something happens to the inmates then transporting them to facilities like the hospitals, courts etc.

The environments within which the Correctional Officer works in are not normal situations. They do a very dangerous work. Every year there are injuries and casualties due to confrontations of the inmates of the jail they are working in. the environment of the jail including the condition of living such as inclusion of lightings; air-conditionings etc affect their work indirectly.
