
Milwaukee Public Schools is situated at the state of Wisconsin. It is the 23rd largest school system of United States. In the year 2006, approximately 98,000 students enrolled in these schools where full time staffs are approximately 6000. There are almost 223 substitute teachers in this whole school district.
Milwaukee Public Schools were founded as non profitable organization in the year 1998. Since then it served educational and charitable purposes so that the students may excel in education and it has also developed community participation. Still it is working with a goal of increasing learning opportunity for the students, involvement of parents and trying to increase the opportunity of creative and innovative educational programs.
Milwaukee Public Schools are working as a magnet school. The areas with interests in academics, or the arts are separated by these schools. Milwaukee is the first community, to adopt a school voucher program in the United States in 1990. It gives vital importance to improve poor students performance on standardized tests from the time of foundation and it is still working to bring reform in the school system.
Generally Milwaukee Public Schools starts between 7.45 am to 8.45 am and school hour is over between 2.25 pm. to 3.45 pm. In the inclement weather they take decision to close the school after taking the opinion of weather service. Some times they leave it upon the parents whether to close the schools or not.
Currently, Tim Petersons from District 1, Jeff Spence from District 2, Michael Bonds from District 3, Bruce Thompson are some of the prominent names in the Board of Directors. The entire administration of Milwaukee Public Schools is run by this Board of Directors.
In 2002 No Child Left Behind Act was passed by the congress of Milwaukee Public Schools. Under this act, a student, who needs improvement, gets free tuition. This is called Supplemental Educational Services. These free tuitions have been given before or after the school hours or at the end of the week. Providers of this service have to get an approval from the Wisconsin Department of Instruction.
From January 2007 students of Milwaukee Public Schools are not allowed to use the cell phone at the campus. Milwaukee school authorities took this decision to stop the involvement in violence. They took this decision when some of their students were caught in red hand at the time of use their cell phone when they called outsiders to fight in the campus.
