Indian Food Spices Sweets Fish Chicken Mutton Lamb Roti Paratha Dosa


The main feature of the Indian food is the presence of spices in almost every dishes and usage of several herbs in the cooking. Indian is a land of mixed culture. Therefore it is obvious here one can find several kinds of cuisine.

All the cuisines are different from each other with different cooking styles and techniques. Both vegetarian and non-vegetarian Indian food dishes are available. Non-veg dishes are mainly of fish, chicken, goat, lamb and other meats, but in most of the parts beef is not available that much as most of the Hindus do not eat beef.

Depending on the regions and demography, Indian foods are available in several kinds. Though there is diversity in this sub continent, Indian foods are mainly of four kinds – north Indian, south Indian, West Indian and East Indian. All the dishes are different from each other and different recipes along with different spices are used in the food processing. As we find in history, several people from several cultures outside India invaded the land. These cultures also had left its mark in the cuisine of the country.

Another feature of the Indian food is that there are not more than two and three courses. These are eaten with pickle and chutney and with rice and roti or bread, a kind of carbohydrate staple and desserts.

North Indian food is characterized with the use of dairy products like milk, butter, paneer, and ghee. These foods are mainly baked and are famous for several kinds of rotis and parathas like tandoori, nun, kulcha, poori, bhatura. Chilies and saffron are most used spices along with the usage of butter.

East Indian food is specialist in desserts. Here one can find several kinds of sweets like rasgulla, chumchum, chhena guja, sandesh and many more. There are some north Indian dishes as well, which had originated from the eastern part of Indian like west Bengal and Orissa. Use of poppy seeds in the cooking has made the East Indian food unique among all the Indian delicacies.

South Indian food is all about coconut and coconut oil along with the use of rice in almost all the dishes. Some of the popular dishes from this region is dosa, idli, bonda, vada. Use of curry leaves is prominent in the foods. Sambar and rasam are essential part of the south Indian cuisine.

In the western Indian food there are some sub categories like Rajasthani, Gujarati, Maharastrian and Goan foods. Rice, pav vaji, sea fish and sea foods are some of the dominants in the food list of the region. Indian cuisine is so popular worldwide that you can find several Indian restaurants in other countries. In other countries also, restaurants in accordance with the Indian food sub categories are also available. Indian cuisine
