The Teaching Company is an organisation that produces and releases recorded lectures of the best professors of universities. These lectures are converted into audiotape, CD, DVD, MPEG-4 and MP3 according to market demand.
The Teaching Company is based at Chantilly in Virginia, though the recording studio has been set up outside Washington DC.The ex-chief counsel of the United States Senate Commiittee on labor and Human Resources, Thomas M. Rollins is the founder of The Teaching Company. The organisation was functional from 1990. Rollins himself being a graduate from Harvard Law School, realised the neccesity and effectiveness of audio-video in studies.
Initially Rollins tried to motivate the government in to this novel study method and tried to convince the government to launch a project on producing audio-video tapes for the public. But his effort did not take shape due to Constitutional restrains. But he did not lose hope. He started convincing top professors to come together , form The Teaching Company, and start producing and selling recorded courses in the education market.
Having started with about twenty courses, The Teaching Company now has opened an option list for the students with more than 260 courses to choose from. Each course offers a recorded content of more than three thousand hours. The courses are based on nine subjects. They are ancient and medieval history, modern history, social sciences, fine arts and music, literature and English language, religion, science and mathematics, philosophy and intellectual history, and business and economics.
The courses at The Teaching Company are formatted specialy for adult education and life-learners. The formats are similar to the University or college courses that are developed for the under-graduates. Besides the company has laso developed a series of courses for the high school students to supplement school education.
The course developed at The Teaching Company for high school students include printed transcripts, additional booklets, summary of lectures, reference reading lists, general bibliographiesa and suggestions.
However, on October 2, 2006, the administration of The Teaching Company was handed over to a private equity investment firm called Brentwood Associates. Some of the top instructors involved with this company are Arthur T. Benjamin, Malcolm David, Philip Daileader and many more eminent personalities.
