
Being born on January 19, 1808 and died on May 14, 1887, Lysander Spooner is a highly intellectual man of 19th Century. He devoted his entire life in serving as an individualist anarchist, abolitionist, entrepreneur, political philosopher, leader of labor movement and legal theorist. He is even for establishing his American Letter Mail Company which was a rival to the U. S. Post Office. However, the United States Government had forced out his company.
Lysander Spooner has originated in the lands of Athol, Massachusetts and had died around 1O Clock in a Saturday afternoon in a small room at 109 Myrtle Street. While he died he was surrounded by all his books, pamphlets, manuscripts and all his works over which he had fought throughout half of his life. His lifes career began as a lawyer which was against the laws of Massachusetts. Lysander had never attended a law college and had acquired the knowledge from famous politicians and lawyers like Charles Allen and John Davis. However according to state laws it was mandatory for the graduates to undergo three year training with the attorney while the non-graduates will have to have 5 years training period.
With the advice of Lysanders mentors he began practicing in Worcester just after three years. Thus Lysander Spooner had violated the legal laws and circumstances obliged him to leave his law post. In 1840 he moved back to his fathers farm. During 1840s postal rates will were very high so he established his own American Letter Mail Company in 1844 to compete the United States Post Offices monopoly. Thereby he issued a pamphlet entitled The Unconstitutionality of the Laws of Congress Prohibiting Private Mails to directly hit the laws of Massachusetts bar.
Lysander Spooner had achieved success with his mail company but competing with the government had hit him back with financial crisis. He ceased his shop without even claiming his constitutional rights. He acquired name and fame throughout the nation as a one of the greatest abolitionist. In 1846 he published a book under the title The Unconstitutionality of Slavery which reflects the acclaim among many other abolitionists. This book had to go through many controversies within the abolitionist movement over the matter that whether United States Constitution encouraged slavery.
Till 1861 Lysander Spooner had actively taken part in the slavery movements. He even used his hands in publishing many pamphlets on Jury Nullification and other legal defenses for those slaves who had escaped and been placed in his legal department. Though this great man is no more alive but his works and ethics will always remind us of his existence. He works have set an example before the future generation to fight against wrong.
