Crime has revolutionized itself and now it has taken the form of cyber crime. Any crime or fraud committed through the medium of the Internet is an Internet Crime. Credit card fraud, phishing, online data disruption, and illegal downloading of software and music are such types of crime. The worst crime known today is the transfer of virus on the network.
The Internet economy has grown to a colossal size and millions of terabytes of data are being transferred daily. Despite of the intricate security mechanisms Internet Crime still prevails mostly in developing and developed countries. The highway of information is no longer safe for traffic due to the growing knowledge of hackers and virus insinuators. Some crimes are well taken care of whereas a few crimes only puzzle the federal unit of the Internet.
In todays world the people, banks, hotels, online universities are all interconnected through the wide area network. From the four corners of the world customers purchase items on the net but Internet Crime has risen so high that it is becoming difficult for anti crime units to cope up with the massive size of the net. Banking information, company matters and money transactions are done through the net and they are being robbed of both their money and dignity daily.
There are two types of Internet Crime, the first being committed on the net and this type of crime has been growing at a fast pace. Crimes like hijacking over a network, breaking and entering through firewalls and cyber vandalism have all taken new routes to avoid being detected. Then there is phishing, which is related to credit cars. These crimes go unnoticed by the public only until they receive a huge bill proving that a second unauthorized person used their card.
Symantec is the leading anti crime unit against the cyber thieves. Internet Crime has been battled for year and it has now become a commercial issue. According to Symantec the crimes are also done through trusted websites like MySpace, Orkut and Facebook. The FBI in the United States have fought hard and won the race many times but in spite of that as of 2004 more than 90 percent of companies have suffered from online security breaches, data loss and financial loss.
Internet Crime has to be stopped and measures are being taken by the FBI and other investigative groups to abolish the crimes. The first law against crime was the Counterfeit Access Device and Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1984. Despite of all these measures and heavy security crime over the net has evolved with the evolution of new technology. But to be on the safe side one can always prevent what cannot be cured.
