Buddhism Symbol Chakra Lotus Stupa Mandalas Astamangala

An important Buddhism symbol is the eight-spoked wheel or chakra which denotes the Eight-fold path to a virtuous life as taught by Buddha. Among other symbols which are significant in Buddhism are the lotus flower, stupa, mandalas and certain physical characteristics of the Buddha. These symbols may be aniconic or centered around the physical image of Buddha.

The Dharma Chakra constitutes a multi-dimensional Buddhism symbol. It is generally depicted as a wheel with eight spokes. Originally the Dharma Wheel signified royalty but from third century B.C.E onwards came to be used in a Buddhist context as evident from its depiction on the pillars of Ashoka. These are a series of pillars constructed during the reign of Ashoka, the powerful Mauryan king, after he converted to Buddhism.

In the context of a Buddhism symbol, the Dharma Wheel represents the teachings of Buddha on the path to enlightenment. The eight spokes signify the Noble Eightfold Path of Buddhism. The wheels hub represents discipline which is necessary for meditation while its rim stands for mindfulness or samadhi which brings about cohesion in all. The wheel is depicted with sharp edges which would strike through ignorance.

Another important Buddhism symbol is the Lotus flower. Even though it may have several meanings, in Buddhism it primarily signifies the pure state of the mind which can aspire to the highest levels of existence. The Swastika is also one of those symbols which have varying connotations in different religions and cultures. In Buddhism the Swastika, known as Manji in Japanese, represents universal harmony as well as the balance of opposing forces.

Yet another significant Buddhism symbol is the mandala whose specific meanings vary according to the different sects of Buddhism. Generally a mandala is depicted as a geometric pattern which represents the universe in symbolic terms as it might appear to the human perspective. In Vajrayana Buddhism, the mandala signifies a sacred or enlightened space and in many tantric sects it is used as an aid to meditation.

One important category of Buddhism symbol relates to the depiction of certain physical characteristics of the Buddha. These include 32 primary signs as well as 88 secondary signs as compiled in the discourse, Sutra of the Marks in the religious text Digha Nikaya. Other than these there is a set of eight auspicious symbols in Buddhism called the ashtamangala which are often depicted in public or household art. Buddhist symbolism
