Child Development Or Pediatrics From Infancy To Adulthood

Child development refers to both biological and psychological development of a small child. The process of child development starts from the time a child is born to the time when the child steps to the threshold of youth. A number of stages are involved in the growth process and Pediatrics is the branch of science that deals with this specific subject.

Pediatrics is that branch of child physiology and medicine that concerns with the all round development of children and child care. In the process of child growth, we find a number of stages, like- the time from when a child is born that is the neonatal stage to infaria/infancy (0-1.5 years) to when he/she simply toddles.(1.5-2 years). This particular stage of child development is followed by preadolescence down to adolescence and puberty.

When a small child is born what remains our prime concern are the physical and mental abilities and its development. A number of stages are involved in the process of child development, like the eye-hand co-ordination of the small child and co-ordination of the different body parts with the transmission of the nerve impulses. It is observed that a thorough knowledge in this subject helps the children in the upbringing of the child.

Few other factors go in making the process of child development simpler and easy going. Some important aspects in this process are: Patience, problem solving, social skills and creativity. A greater emphasis is laid behind the fact that this habits needs to be inculcated in the child from a very early age.

A number of theories are involved in the process of child development. Other important factors in this process are- the child interaction with its immediate surrounding and development of the social, emotional, cognitive and the overall pedagogical and learning process of the child. This developmental process carries on to the to the next phase in the childs life, when he/she first steps in to a new world - into his/her first school.

Psychosexual theory propagated by Sir Sigmund Freud has opened up a new dimension in the process of child development. The process involved in the developmental stages of a child carries over from the time when humans develop, to the time they become settled on different developmental stages. The first developmental stage is the Oral stage, when the child derives pleasure from mere touch or nursing.

Next stage in the process of child development is the anal stage, when a child evacuates bowels. This stage is followed by the phallic stage and Sir Sigmund Freud argued that children at this stage fancy the mother as an object of sex and undergo Oedipus Complex.
