Gateway Computers Fortune 500 California Hardware Company


Gateway Computers or Gateway Incorporated, an US computer hardware company, is based in Irvine, California. Established in 1985 as 'Gateway 2000', the company has come a long way from being in the Fortune 500 list of the largest companies (in mid-2000s) to being acquired by the Acer Inc in 2007. Its services include developing, manufacturing, supporting, and marketing vast range of PCs, servers, computer monitors, computer accessories.

Gateway Computers' some of the key people have been J. Edward Coleman(CEO), Richard Snyder(Chairman), Ted Waitt(Co-founder), Mike Hammond(Co-founder) etc. After undergoing few troublous years of financial crisis, in 2007, Gateway decided to sell all its professional business segment to MPC Corporation. Acer Inc. did finalise the deal of acquisition of Gateway for an amount worth of US$710 million.

Gateway Computers used to be one of the earliest among the direct sales PC companies to get successful.With the Holstein cow mascot, the company began a number of retail stores which were known as the Gateway Country Stores. Owing to the financial crisis and its inability to cope up with it, Gateway made a decision to close down it 188 stores. The company started outsourcing its customer support and from 2002 widened the range of business by launching the products such as plasma screen TVs, digital cameras, DLP projectors, MP3 players etc. From 2007, April, notebooks of China have been produced in China and the desktops made of 'Mexico stickers'. On 16 October, 2007, Acer has been able to make the aquisition of the Gateway complete for a whopping US$710 million.

Gateway Computers' specific markets include Home & Home Office, Small Business, Gaming, ducation,Government, Medium and Large Business. The series of their laptops are C140X, NX100X, CX210, NX260X, NX560, NX860. Its popular desktops are dX420, FX510, FX530 and Profile 6 series. Gateway has also ventured into the business of LCD-oriented computer monitors. Some of them are of 19, 22, 30. Some of them have been provided with the USB ports.

Gateway Computers' other products include plasma TVs, 'Convertible notebooks', PC servers. The latest gadget from the Gateway has been the 'Gateway One'. It is not only easy to use but has been made keeping in mind the aspect of aestheticism. It sells software products such as Microsoft Windows Vista, 'bare-bone' computers which are not often being installed by any sofware program. Chiefly, Gateway rivals with Dell, Hewlett Packard, Apple Inc.,Sony, Lenavo and Toshiba. And when it comes to doing business outside the US, its rivals are Acer, Packard Bell etc.

Gateway Computers' Board of Directors has six persons in total. Richard Snyder has been the Chairman of the board. Some of the other members include Scott Galloway, Joseph Parham, Quincy Allen, David E. Russel etc. On 7 September, 2006, J. Edward Coleman became the chief executive officer of the company.
