Cub Foods Chain Of Grocery Stores In Iowa Minnesota Illinois Miami


Cub Foods refers to the chain of grocery store with total of eighty-four stores that are found in Iowa, Minnesota, Central Illinois, Wisconsin as well as the Miami Valley that is located in Ohio. The company has its complete ownership in the hands of the subsidiary of Supervalu which is based in Eden Prairie, Minnesota.

The store became popular on account of its slogan as no frills; sack your own groceries.... Hooleys Supermarkets which was located in Minnesota laid the foundation of Cub Foods. The term CUB refers to Consumers United for Buying and Cub Foods was the initial store to provide food at discounted rates. Supervalu of Minnesota purchased this chain of store in the year 1980, accompanied with five stores that were based in the Twin Cities. Once the buying agreements were fulfilled, the five stores turned up to eighty-three which were positioned at the three different states.

WinCo Foods were in charge of many of the stores of Cub Foods till the year 1999. It also had its 8 stores in Colorado upto 2003 and after that they entered into a selling arrangement of many of their stores to Kroger. The chain was also extended to the areas of Atlanta and Nashville during the 1990s. It also had two stores in Columbus, Ohio till 23rd May, 1997. It is at the Columbus Square, where the earlier Cub is found as a Kroger.

On account of Supervalu acquiring Albertsons along with the Jewel-Osco stores, which are located in Chicago it turned the Cub Foods of Chicago to an investment firm with its head as Cerberus Capital Management in order to prevent the accumulation of market at a single place. Under the control of Cerberus, four Cub Foods locations namely Bedford Park, Algonquin, Naperville as well as 87th Street in Chicago were closed. He further stated that the rest of the stores of Illinois was also at verge of selling to other operators.

10th December 2006, marks the closure of the remaining Chicagoland Cub Foods Stores. The major part of the Cub Foods stores were sold in the hands of Central Grocers Coopeartive and now the business is carried out in the form of Strack and Van Til and Ultra Foods through the coperativess wholly-owned division. While some of them as Garden Fresh Markets by a member and the rest were purchased by Grand Mart International Foods. Their earlier slogans used to be Great Food, Great Prices, Save More, Get More as well as the Store Next door. Cub Foods
