
The Neapolitan Mastiff dog is a huge, primeval dog class that can be traced to the period of 168 BC. The alternative names of Neapolitan Mastiff dog are Mastino Napolitano, Mastino and Italian Mastiff. It originally belongs to Italy. Its common nickname is Neo. Furthermore, Neos do not do well in hot climate, and are easily prone to heatstroke.
Like most giant breeds of dogs, the Neapolitan Mastiff dog does not have very long lifeline, nearly 7 to 9 years. There are few healthy Neos that have lived up to 11-12 years. This enormous class of dog is frequently utilized as a watchdog and protector of family and property. These breed also serves as an aid for fighting against Lions in the Colosseo and other historic Roman ground.
The appearance of Neapolitan Mastiff dogs is characterised by their droopy skin. The head is covered with wrinkle and folds and the neck with hanging flap of skin. There are 4 skin colors, Black, Grey blue, Mahogany and blonde. Ears may short or may not be so. January 1st 2007 marked the prohibition of cutting off ears or cut tails in Italy as it is in the rest of Europe .
The American Kennel Club laid the standardization Size and Proportion for the mastiff dogs. Male Neapolitan Mastiffs should be nearly 26–31 inches i.e. 66–79 cm at the withers and it should weigh nearly150 pounds i.e.70 kg. At the same time females should be 24–29 inches i.e.61–74 cm and should be near to 110 pounds i.e.50 kg in weight.
The Neapolitan Mastiff dog woofs, only if irritated. It is famous for niggling on burglars so as to stop them from entering the house. They are quick in mastering skills but are tremendously obstinate. Females are friendlier and are liked by families in comparison to males, who are violent. The Neapolitan Mastiff dog is an offspring of the Molossus.
Mastiff dog need special nurture and protection for bathing, cleaning the face and body as they huge folds and considerable body. If proper care is not taken for folds it will result in emitting bad odors, spots near the muzzle areas due to the infections or demodex can penetrate the part of the feet. Neapolitans are not a very active breed in exercising owing to the incapacity of retaining energy and their heavy weight.
Mastiff
