New Jersey State Bird Includes Patridges Grouse Turkeys Loons Ducks


New Jersey state bird is comprised of large variety of wild bird species as per the records of the New Jersey Bird Records Committee. There exists 458 species as the origin of the two other species is not yet confirmed. The markings, which are used for them is (A) standing for accidental, (E) for extinct, (Ex) for extirpated as well as (I) for Introduced.

The list is in the form of taxonomic order and is inspired from the The Check-list of North American Birds, the publication of which is done by the American Ornithologists' Union. There exists 43 species of ducks, geese and swan as the New Jersey state bird. These birds belong to the order Anseriformes and family Anatidae and are aquatic. They are comprised of webbed feet, flat bills as well as feathers that is specialised in shedding oils. The various kinds of ducks and goose are Black-bellied Whistling-Duck Dendrocygna autumnalis, Greater White-fronted Goose Anser albifrons, Canada Goose Branta canadensis, Labrador Duck Camptorhynchus labradorius to name a few of them.

The other kind of New Jersey state bird are Patridges, Grouse, Turkeys and Old World Quail belonging to the family Phasianidae. These are terrestrial birds, which have different sizes and are relatively plump shaped and have wings that are comparatively shorter. These are used for various games as well as for domestic purposes to provide food to the human beings.

There exists 180 species of this kind throughout the world with 4 among them as New Jersey state bird, which are Ring-necked Pheasant Phasianus colchicus, Ruffed Grouse Bonasa umbellus, Greater Prairie-Chicken Tympanuchus cupido, Wild Turkey Meleagris gallopavo. Loons are from the family Gaviidae and are aquatic birds that resemble a big duck in its size but has got absolutely no relation with them. They have mostly grey or black plumage and are with bills that are in the shape of a spear.

They have good swimming skills and can also fly to large distances but they have a difficult time on land on account of their legs, which are at the rear of their body. Five of its species are found in the world and out of them 3 are New Jersey state bird namely Red-throated Loon Gavia stellata, Pacific Loon Gavia pacifica, Common Loon Gavia immer. The albatrosses belonging to family Diomedeidae are the largest flying bird and two of its species are found in New Jersey. New Jersey birds
